Leads or Contacts? Choose the Right Salesforce Object
Salesforce has two objects for people — understanding the difference helps you import smarter.
Salesforce Leads
- Unqualified prospects not yet in your pipeline
- Imported via the Data Import Wizard → Leads
- Can be converted to Contact + Account + Opportunity
- Best for: Cold outreach, top-of-funnel lists from CAPT
Salesforce Contacts
- People already linked to an Account
- Imported via Data Import Wizard → Contacts
- Require an existing Account (company) to associate with
- Best for: Known accounts you're expanding into
For most CAPT use cases (prospecting from websites), Leads is the right starting object.

How to Import Your Leads via Salesforce Data Import Wizard
The Data Import Wizard handles up to 50,000 records per file — no Data Loader required.
Export CSV from CAPT
Go to My Database in the CAPT popup and click Export CSV. Choose Salesforce format.
Open Data Import Wizard
In Salesforce, go to Setup → Data Import Wizard. Select Leads as the object to import.
Upload and Map Fields
Upload the CSV and map each column to a Salesforce Lead field. Email is auto-matched. Set the deduplication rule.
Start Import and Monitor
Click Start Import. Salesforce emails you when done. Note: Salesforce requires LastName — fill that column in the CSV before importing, or use a default value like the email domain.
Salesforce + CAPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Salesforce admin rights to import via CSV?
You need the "Import Leads" or "Import Contacts" permission. By default, these are granted to standard Sales and Marketing profiles. Ask your Salesforce admin if the Data Import Wizard isn't visible in your Setup menu.
What's the maximum file size for Salesforce CSV import?
The Data Import Wizard supports up to 50,000 records per import file. For larger lists, split your CAPT export into multiple files or use Salesforce Data Loader for bulk imports above that limit.
Will Salesforce create duplicate leads if I import the same email twice?
During import, you can set the matching rule to "Email" — Salesforce will then update existing leads instead of creating duplicates. CAPT also deduplicates on email before export, giving you double protection.
Can I assign leads to a specific owner or queue after import?
Yes. The Data Import Wizard lets you assign all imported leads to a specific user or lead queue, or trigger assignment rules based on lead attributes like geography or industry.
